1960s SOUL AND MOTOWN

“Brought together for a one-off show to celebrate the release of the movie The Sapphires, local Indigenous group The Merindas discovered more magic than they’d bargained for.” – The Music

The Merindas are Australia’s premier Indigenous female Motown duo, honouring some of the 1960’s greatest hits and adding their own along the way.

The name comes from the Aboriginal Eora language and means ‘beautiful woman’ – a tribute to their Indigenous heritage – but there’s far more to this highly talented group than just their name. Candice Lorrae and Kristel Kickett are amazing performers who have supported the likes of Kasey Donovan, Christine Anu and Troy Cassar Daley as The Merindas.

Performing hits like ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, ‘Baby Love’ and ‘How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)’, The Merindas perform with glitzy costumes, an energetic gravitas and a sound so infectious they’ll be sure to have everybody dancing.

After catching their big break in 2012 performing at a one-off show for Noongar Radio’s premiere of the hit film The Sapphires, The Merindas sold out their first show in 2012 and have been performing non-stop ever since.

In 2013 the group was nominated for a Deadly award in the category of ‘Most Promising New Talent in Music’. They have supported some of Australia’s biggest stars including Jessica Mauboy, Nathaniel, Kasey Donovan, Christine Anu, Troy Cassar-Daley and American Grammy Award Winning Artist, Brandy.

Rhythm 22
The Merindas are currently backed by soulful 4-piece band Rhythm 22 who draw influences from their backgrounds in R&B, soul, funk, rock and jazz and consist of drums, bass, guitar and keys.

Since the group formed in 2010 they have been well received by audiences in some of Perth’s top venues including Benny’s Bar Fremantle and the Subiaco Hotel, and played to sell-out crowds at the Embassy Ballroom while supporting New Zealand touring act 1814 on their national tour.
